When is Emancipation Day?
February 9th
November 21st
August 1st
What is Emancipation Day?
A day to celebrate the strength and perseverance of Black communities in Canada.
The date of true liberation when every enslaved person in British North America was freed and definitely not forced to serve their former owners for 4-6 years as apprentices.
The actual date the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833 came into effect in the French Empire.
A Canadian provincial holiday.
Why Emancipation Day?
Because slavery was a real and protected institution here on these lands for centuries – and acknowledging Emancipation Day brings truth to this lived reality and the existence of 400 years of Black Canada.
Why not?!
Why the HECK not?!
